Great explanation of red packets! As to the last sentence about pushing your luck, it would be more common to respond to "恭喜发财" with "红包拿来！" which means "Give me a red packet!" (Yes, we like being direct! :P)

umm...DEFINE ''AUSSIES"

Where is the tourist (first comment) from? Australia is not a zoo where you can come here and see the ''Aussies'' you want to see. How do you know, by just looking, that the supposedly white people you see here are actually ''Aussies'', as a fact the top groups who immigrate to Australia but retain their citizenship are from UK and NZ! Or vice versa, the asians you see who may be born here, raised here, is an Australian citizen.. how are they not Aussie?

It's a wonder why they even call Australia multicultural when considering how many times history repeats itself - EVERY time there is a surge of new immigrants from ethnicity with darker skin, there's xenophobic vilification and plain racism. The most concerning part of it is it's often the old 'white' immigrants themselves who are out to get the new ones. So forget trying to balance it out, it's enough to try and accept what we've got.

This is so true. People always ask me where I am from, depending on how they sounded -if I feel annoyed or offended by the way they're asking, then I'd reply the suburb/city (in Australia) I am from, pretending that I didn't understand the ''true meaning'' of their question. The smart ones will give an awkward laugh and stop there, but many will continue to ask where my parents are from or where my hometown is. Makes me feel as if being Australian for 3/4 of my life is irrelevant to my identity.

Great story, good question. I have trouble answering that one too. Also, great comments. I am frequently asked where I am from too. It has nothing to do with my appearance, but my accent. It's "fading" now but people still hear it sometimes. I was born in Sydney to Greek parents and now live in Canada. Where am I from? I've lived in three countries and think of all of them as home. But which one is really "home?" People ask because they want to know where the accent came from so I answer their question by saying "Australia." But where am I from?

Hi Anna, thank you for sharing your story. I've experienced hatred with racism before when I was in the train with my mom at Melbourne and it was one of the hardest things to ever be okay with. Not too long ago I have learned an attitude that to face the problem, ask why it does and how I can improve this, rather than shunning away from the issue which I did.
